When trees reach a displeasing height, topping is a practice that is sometimes used to cut back the vertical stem and primary limbs of the trees. We strongly advise against this potentially damaging practice! Topping hurts the tree by leaving large wounds, reducing the trees ability to make food from its canopy, creates a potential hazard by weakening the tree structure, and leads to bark damage due to increased sun exposure to the tree. Additionally, topping reduces the real estate value of trees dramatically because it disfigures the tree. Here at Eric’s Tree Service, we offer crown reduction services. This type of pruning preserves the structure of the crown, but reduces foliage and controls the size of the tree. We will shorten limbs up to six feet at a time. Doing so facilitates growth back to the interior of the tree, making the tree more compact.
